Research:
I investigate the development of trust in parental support during distress and the mechanisms explaining this development and changes in trust over time. Most of my research is focused on middle childhood attachment. My research starts from the idea that trust develops as the result of a learning process. The model I study integrates insights from developmental and social psychology, developmental psychopathology, cognitive learning theory, and biological research on endocrinological, (epi)genetic), and psychophysiological processes. Moreover, my work has a strong clinical psychological focus. As a clinical psychologist, I constantly seek to translate my research into clinical interventions. As a result, I got involved in research on Attachment-based Family Therapy (ABFT), an evidence-based intervention to treat depressed and suicidal adolescents. I contribute to the dissemination of this therapy through an ABFT training center I founded.
